A post about self-publishing.

Now I’m drivin’ a Porsche…

Imagine you’re just getting your license to drive, and you’re given a Smart car to drive around… one of those little mini things that fit one and a half humans inside and look like they’d blow off the road in a stiff wind. While not everyone is enamored with such a small vehicle, it does the job at getting you from Point A to Point B. It may not have the best handling, or power, but you can drive on the roads and park in any spot just like any other car.

Now, imagine you get a job as a courier. You deliver packages and whatnot all over the place. You get paid more if you can deliver more packages at the same time, and if you get them there faster (forget about stupid things like speed limits for this exercise). What kind of car do you think you would need for this job? Probably one with a pretty good sized cargo space… one with a big gas tank so you wouldn’t have to fill up as often… one with good aerodynamics to keep you going fast… one with a powerful engine to keep your speed high… one with great suspension for handling corners and rough terrain (like the billions of potholes in Spokane). What if you could get a car like that for $20.

One of KDP’s shortcomings…

statsI use Kindle Direct Publishing exclusively to publish my books. There are some advantages, and some disadvantages. And while I could go into both of those topics, I’m kinda making today into a rant.

Editor’s Note: All of the information that follows, pertains to the KDP Kindle Unlimited program that you can opt into. It’s not mandatory, but if you do, you are making a promise not to sell your book through any other site… only on Amazon.

Are you kidding?

kittyNot sure if you knew this or not, but I dabble in artwork as well as writing. I’ve been drawing and scribbling down crazy characters and animals for a lot longer than I’ve been a writer.

I found out about these things called ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) from a website called atcsforall. I signed up and participated in a few swaps (a theme is picked and you send your cards to someone in the mail… then they shuffle all the cards and everyone gets something from different people that participated in the swap). I found it extremely fun to get baseball card sized bits of artwork from all around the world. CLICK HERE to see a gallery of some of the cards I’ve done.

Just what the heck is ‘good enough’?…

goodenoughToday, I’m gonna be talking about (in a roundabout kinda way) goals… or just what is ‘good enough’ when it comes to my stories.

We all had to go to school (I hope). And chances are, we were all pressured to do the best we could when it came to ‘earning’ our grades. I remember a good friend that would always talk to me about how their mom would pressure him to get those A’s and not settle for anything less. Go for the best and leave everyone else in the dust.

Audiobooks… tell me a story…

img_0093Since I seem to be on the Amazon kick, I thought I’d touch on one of the possibilities we have after (or even before or at the same time) we publish our book. Audiobooks. Amazon has the Audiobook Creation Exchange.

If you head over there, you’ll notice right off the bat that there’s a search bar… just to look for your book (or yourself, if you’re so inclined). If you’ve already published on Amazon, it should find your book with ease. Claim the book as yours, then you have the rights to create the audiobook version (and add some more income to your bank account).

The pricing dilemma…

20120930_141333We’re nearing the end of our quest… to publish our very own book. Just a few more questions to answer, and then it’s a short (approx. 12 hours or less) wait, before the money starts pouring in.

You’ll notice that the very first thing you see on the final page is: Verify your publishing territories. This is just asking you if you own the rights to publish your book worldwide… or only in specific areas (because you sold the rights already). Chances are, you’re gonna pick worldwide… and that means that Amazon is going to sell your book around the world for you.

Tackling the front and back…

file0001817239724So we have our book written, edited, saved in the format that Amazon likes, and a cover for it. What else could we need? How about the front and back matter? What’s that, you say? Yup, we have just a little further to go before publishing, but we actually get to make some choices now.

The cover…

file9141267495225Now we get to the cover… that one part of our book that you’re not supposed to judge it by. (yeah, right) This topic alone has so many links and directions to head out to on the internet, that just researching book covers is an adventure all its own.So, since this is the nitty gritty version of getting our book published, we’re gonna go for the quick and easy steps that you can take to get a book cover.

Publishing your eBook…

file3371280732314This week will be the down and dirty, quick and easy steps to publishing your eBook on Amazon. Why Amazon? Because I’ve done it. (don’t know if you’ve noticed the ‘Books’ linky up there.) Why not any others? Because I haven’t… yet.  (I plan to. Possibly.)

So… we’ve written our masterpiece (found our treasure), edited it within an inch of its life (polished it up nice and shiny), and now… we need to publish it (display it in a museum for all to enjoy). The first step is to make sure we have an Amazon account. (don’t have one? I’ll wait… the process is quite simple. AMAZON) Got one, now? Let’s move on.
